Advanced robotics and automation: Key considerations for human interaction and trust

As advanced robotic systems in the workplace become more autonomous, there will be a shift in human-robot relations from using technology to interacting with technology. The quality of this interaction can present both opportunities and risks for occupational safety and health (OSH). Therefore, the specific design of robotic systems must be taken into consideration.

This policy brief looks at anthropomorphic robotic design, interaction design principles and the importance of transparency in in relation to OSH. It also stresses the balance of in HRI and the factors that influence this trust.

The policy brief concludes by recommending key points to consider when designing robotic systems to achieve successful outcomes that take both OSH and automated performance into consideration.
